Repair options
The right repair depends on how much of the tooth is lost and whether the nerve is affected:
- Small chip: smoothed or rebuilt with tooth-coloured composite, often in one visit
- Larger break: a crown to cover and protect the tooth
- Break that reaches the nerve: root canal treatment, then a crown
- Tooth that cannot be saved: removal and replacement, for example with an implant
Watch: broken or chipped tooth

About this videoWhy missing teeth can lead to broken teeth

About this video
What to do straight away
Rinse your mouth gently, keep any broken piece in milk, and avoid chewing on that side. If a permanent tooth is knocked out completely, hold it by the crown (not the root), keep it in milk and come in immediately: the first hour matters most.
Frequently asked questions
Is a chipped tooth an emergency?
A small painless chip can wait a few days. Pain, bleeding, a large break or a knocked-out tooth should be seen as soon as possible.
Can a chipped front tooth look natural again?
Usually, yes. Tooth-coloured materials are shade-matched to your own teeth so the repair blends in.
