What is tooth extraction & oral surgery?
A tooth extraction removes a tooth that is badly broken, severely infected, loose from gum disease, or blocking other teeth. A surgical extraction is used for teeth that have not fully come through the gum, such as impacted wisdom teeth.
Dr. Vivek Marda performs surgical extractions with a focus on gentle technique and protecting the surrounding bone, which also helps if you later want an implant.
Who needs it?
- A wisdom tooth that causes pain, swelling or repeated infection
- A tooth broken below the gum line
- A tooth that cannot be saved by a root canal
- Extractions planned before braces

All videosA hidden tooth in the upper jaw, found on a 3D scan
A young patient with toothache. The 3D scan reveals a tooth hidden in the upper jaw (marked with arrows) that could not be seen in the mouth.
About this videoExtra teeth (supernumerary teeth) seen on a 3D scan
Supernumerary teeth are extra teeth beyond the normal set. This 3D scan shows extra teeth in the upper jaw (marked) and how they sit among the regular teeth.
About this videoWhy a 3D scan matters before wisdom tooth removal
This 3D scan shows a patient whose jaw nerve was injured on both sides during the removal of lower wisdom teeth. Checking where the nerve runs before surgery helps avoid this.

About this video
How the procedure works
Step 1
X-ray and planning
We check the tooth's roots and nearby nerves so the procedure is planned safely.
Step 2
Local anaesthetic
The area is fully numbed. You will feel pressure but should not feel pain.
Step 3
Removal
The tooth is gently loosened and removed. For surgical cases, a small opening in the gum may be made and closed with stitches.
Step 4
Aftercare
You bite on gauze to control bleeding and receive written instructions and any medicines.
Recovery and aftercare
Rest for the day and avoid spitting, using a straw, smoking or hot drinks for 24 hours so the healing clot stays in place. Eat soft, cool food. Swelling after wisdom tooth surgery usually peaks on day two and settles within a week.
Frequently asked questions
Is tooth extraction painful?
You should not feel pain during the extraction because of local anaesthetic. Some soreness afterwards is normal and is managed with medicines.
Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?
No. Wisdom teeth that are healthy, fully erupted and easy to clean can stay. We recommend removal only when they cause or are likely to cause problems.
How long does healing take after an extraction?
The gum usually closes within one to two weeks; the bone continues to heal over a few months.
Should I replace an extracted tooth?
Usually yes, except for wisdom teeth. A gap can let neighbouring teeth drift. Implants, bridges or dentures are options.
What should I do if bleeding continues?
Bite firmly on clean gauze for 30 minutes. If bleeding is heavy or does not stop, call us.
